This fortified monastery is a place of pilgrimage and one of the most venerated places in Armenia which is Sacred to the Armenian Apostolic Church. The monastery was erected in the period from the 6th to the 17th centuries. It is located above the underground where the enlightener of Armenia Saint Gregory the Illuminator was thrown in a pit for preaching Christianity before King Trdat decided to adopt Christianity as the countries state religion. The dungeon where the Holy Father suffered was a royal dungeon (‘Khor Virap’ – ‘deep pit’). The prisoners were thrown in this pit, full of venomous snakes and scorpions. According to the legend, St Gregory spent 13 years in this pit.

Of all the sites in Yerevan, we can name Yerevan brandy factory ‘Ararat’ as the most exquisite. Visiting Yerevan and not tasting Armenian brandy is the same as going to the birthday and not tasting the birthday cake. The history of this place begins in a distant 16th century when the Persians built the Erivan fortress here. For a long time, it was the main outpost of the city and was captured by Russian troops at the beginning of the 19th century. Later, in 1853 the fortification was destroyed by a strong earthquake and 8 years later, in 1865, the remnants and the surrounding territories were purchased by Armenian merchant Nekres Tairiants (Tairov). In 1887, this entrepreneur founded a wine factory on the territory of Erivan fortress. Very soon, he opened a line for the production of brandy.
